Edmund fitzgerald?what is it!!?

Yep - Edmund Fitzgerald was a ship, and its sinking was commemorated in a song by Gordon Lightfoot. But I haven't been able to find out 'who' Edmund Fitzgerald was. The ship was obviously named after that person, but there's no references to him anywhere - only to the ship that sank.
